“36 volunteer for downtown Charleston African Burial Memorial” by Meredith Blair

Progress has begun on the memorial at the Gaillard Center to honor individuals of African descent whose remains were discovered in 2013. Thirty-six volunteers from Charleston, spanning ages four to 91, have offered to cast their hands for the Anson Street African Burial Memorial. Each set of hands will represent and pay homage to an ancestor found. The project members emphasize that the memorial will symbolize the community and all African American ancestors in the Charleston area.
