About us

A Memorial for 36 Ancestors buried between 1750 and 1780 on Anson Street in what is now downtown Charleston and for all the enslaved Africans/African Americans buried in Charleston in unmarked graves before 1865.

Stephen Hayes, creator of the Memorial, has cast the hands of 36 volunteers whose age, ethnicity and gender match those of the Ancestors for the Memorial fountain.  36 pairs of hands, a jet of water behind each, surround a fountain built near the vault where the bodies of the Ancestors are reinterred.
